The time is typically 10:30am to 1:30pm on a Saturday. 2 hours are classroom instruction and there's one hour of range time where you shoot 50 rounds with a Ruger MK III .22LR. The cost is $80.

For a more private lesson which covers the same material, you can schedule any day and time on a one-on-one basis. The cost is only nominally higher at $115.

Call Ruperto at 310-490-3697 for more information. I bought a couple guns from them in the past. And it's called LA Guns, LA --- as in Los Angeles. However, as of the middle of last year, they stopped selling guns to Californians. They still sell, guns. But only to out-of-staters. They do that through online gun auction sites. They get their inventory from buying guns locally but sell them off outside.

I can what's up though. As a business they're trying to survive and California has made it difficult for legitimate gun businesses to operate. It's a bummer for us. And there are committed gun enthusiasts who see that operation as a form of treachery.

There's a thread in Calguns about it. The LAPD Harbor Range was a good place for people to go and shoot. It was inexpensive, a reasonably nice facility and convenient for many local people. It's in the industrial area of Gaffey Blvd, next to the American Softball Association youth softball fields (the softball players are accustomed to the loud gunfire nearby).

The LAPD Harbor Range had been open to the general public for a long time, and civilians used to hang out there. However, in the middle of last year sometime, the range ceased being available for the general public. LAPD still use it, of course, but for some reason, it's no longer available for civilians. You can call their number for verification but they rarely ever picked up the phone even back in the day.

Too bad about them closing down for the general public. That reduces the number of ranges available in the general area. Gun business including ranges have been closing down in Southern California. For South Bay residents, here's what we have left: SoCal Sharpshooter indoor range in Torrance (Western Ave and Torrance Blvd), LAX Range on Manchester just off of the 405 Freeway --- and that's basically it. You can travel to Artesia for the Insight range, and you can go to downtown LA for The Los Angeles Gun Club. After that, nada; unless you don't mind driving even more of a distance.
Property of BeSafeGunTraining.com.

Revolvers Versus Semi-Automatic Pistols

This is a classic issue for all newbies: Should I purchase a revolver or semi-automatic? There is no universal answer that is correct. We cannot say that the revolver is ideal for a beginner. Or the semi-automatic pistol is ideal.

Ultimately, the answer is based on personal preference. As a newbie, that determination will come from some education on the relevant characteristics of these guns.

After learning the facts, you will decide what is right for you.

We will not discuss all aspects of these guns but can focus on characteristics that a beginner will find relevant. The attributes of guns most relevant to the revolver versus the semi-automatic decision are:

· Ease of Use
· Durability
· Reliability
· Maintainability
· Safety Features

East of Use

Let’s review the basic questions presented in the prior chapter with regard to the issue of ease of use:

1. How easy is the gun to hold?
2. How easy is the gun to shoot?
3. How easy is the gun to shoot accurately?
4. How easy is the gun to load?
5. How easy is the gun to unload?
6. How easy is the gun to store?
7. How easy is the gun to obtain training with?
8. How easy is the gun to obtain information about?
9. How easy is the gun to obtain parts and service for?

Just some things to think about!
Property of BeSafeGunTraining.com.

All Safe Defense is Offering Personal Protection Outside the Home course March 24 - 25, 2007

TJ Johnston, chief firearms instructor at All Safe Defense, is going to be offering a new course from the National Rifle Association called "Personal Protection Outside the Home" on March 24 - 25, 2007. It was active back in the 90's. There's a corporation also by that name in California but its registration has since been cancelled.

The new Beverly Hills Gun Club will both be a social and training organization. First and foremost, it's a medium for gun enthusiasts in the area to gather together and organize shooting events and other social events that don't necessarily involve firearms. It'll be about parties, socials, shootouts (not at each other, mind you), day-long range festivities, competitions, collection displays and anything having to do with enthusiasts getting together to just shoot the breeze, figuratively speaking.

You don't have to live in Beverly Hills to participate! There will be a postal marksmanship qualification program so you can qualify as a bona fide pro-marksman, marksman, marksman first class, sharpshooter, expert and distinguised expert. It's based on the honor system. The one caveat is that a distinguised expert needs a witness from a list of qualified gunners.

You will earn certificates, badges and medals for your efforts.

Also, there will be all sorts of branded apparel and gear available. I found myself going through the official list a lot and sometimes just emailing folks who want the information. It's no big deal for me to email it out but after awhile it gets old. The list is public information and available in the Utah Department of Public Police site (Bureau of Criminal Identification).

BTW, if you don't know much about the Utah CCW gun permit, check out the site. It's a pretty useful credential to have even if you don't do a lot of traveling to different states. At the very least, it's a great disaster preparedness credential to have. Think about the people who had to evacuate New Orleans to out-of-state after the Hurricane Katrina disaster. It's sure handy to have a credential that allows you to carry in another state when you need it the most!

Here's the link with the current list of instructors around the country. Click here.
Property of BeSafeGunTraining.com.

Why Handguns?

People are interested in the use of handguns for any number of the following reasons, in the listed order of popularity:

Personal protection

Recreational shooting

Competition shooting

Hunting

Collecting

Women tend to be overwhelmingly motivated by the first reason --- personal protection.

There is the recognition of the need to be self-reliant in taking responsibility for the protection of self, family and home. And there is a recognition that they can do more to protect themselves from the criminal element that can potentially accost them when they are away from home in their daily activities.

Pepper spray is a worthy self-defense tool but it has its limitations. Stun guns are often ineffective. Knives and batons require an inordinate amount of training and expertise to use effectively.

Long guns can do the job but are impractical as carry weapons. You can’t put these things in your purse or your pocket. Shotguns are good for home defense and certainly should be considered. However, handguns can be effective as home weapons and have the added benefit of possible double duty as a carry tool and the comparative ease of storage at home, which is important especially if there are children living in the house.

Certainly, women do participate in recreational shooting and hunting, especially those who were raised in rural areas where gun ownership is a normal part of daily life. However, among newbies, women comprise a very small minority of the participants in these endeavors. Such is also the case with competition shooting and arms collecting.

Property of BeSafeGunTraining.com.

How To Own a Gun and Stay Out of Jail

This book by John Mactinger is a classic:

http://www.amazon.com/How-Own-Gun-Stay-Jail/dp/0964286440/sr=1-1/qid=1172276110/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-7022796-0207955?ie=UTF8&s=books

It's easy-to-read and has a tonload of very useful information for gunowners in California.

Property of BeSafeGunTraining.com.

Here are some of my websites!

Hey, I operate Be Safe Gun Training and so there's a little ;-) commercial motivation, to be sure.

Here are some of my websites to check out:

www.BeSafeGunTraining.com

www.AmericanCCW.com

www.HomeGunDefense.com

www.PrivateGunLessons.com
